Abstract [en]
The Swedish Soil and Crop inventory consists of four surveys that characterizes soil organic carbon (SOC) concentrations (%) in the topsoil (0-20 cm) for arable land in 10-year cycles across the country since 1990. Among other things, it is used to initialize the ICBM model that estimates changes in SOC in the national greenhouse gas reporting under the LULUCF sector. The previous evaluation of inventories I, II and III showed that SOC concentrations increased over time.
This project aimed to evaluate the SOC change in mineral soils using revisited sampling locations from inventory II, III and IV with new results from half of the sampling locations in the latest inventory (IV). We received data for 1055 samples from the ongoing inventory IV, 778 of which were paired revisited sampling locations on mineral soils in inventories II to III. At the national level, the percentage unit increase in SOC from inventory III to IV was not significant (median 0.01%, 95% confidence interval: -0.01 to 0.04%) and much smaller than the increase from inventory II to III.
The analysis at the regional scale showed high variability for the eight agricultural production regions, the three northernmost regions lost SOC from inventory III to IV, while SOC increased in Götalands skogsbygder and Svealands slättbygder. We also observed that the trends in SOC change switched over time in some regions, i.e., SOC increased from inventory II to III in Mellersta Sveriges skogsbygder and Nedre Norrland, but it decreased from inventory III to IV. The proportion of ley in the crop rotations on arable land is one factor that possibly contributes to the decreasing trend in SOC at the national level from inventory III to IV. The reasons for the differing SOC change trends between inventories at both the national and regional level require further investigation when inventory IV is completed.
