Abstract [en]

Soil-monitoring programs can provide important information on spatiotemporal changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) over time, but the analytical errors induced by changing analytical methods are often not taken into account. Reanalyzing archived soil samples within the same batch by using the updated analytical method provides the opportunity to quantify the bias related to observed SOC differences.

Our objective was to investigate whether there is a bias in carbon concentrations depending on the use of different analytical methods in the Swedish soil and crop inventory. For that purpose, we selected archived inventory samples using a Conditioned Latin Hypercube Sampling method from the first three inventories and reanalyzed soil carbon content.

The reanalyzed SOC was slightly lower than the SOC values in the database, with a mean difference of -0.04% and 95% confidence interval of -0.07% ~ -0.01%. Paired sample comparison showed that these differences between reanalyzed SOC and existing SOC values were statistically significant. The analytical method had a significant effect according to the linear regression of reanalyzed SOC with existing SOC and grouped analytical methods and in particular, samples containing carbonates tended to have large differences in the reanalysis, suggesting the bias was depending on the analytical methods to some extent.

Although the analytical method used in the third inventory was similar to the current reanalyzes, the mean and standard error of SOC difference (-0.05%±0.03%) should be taken into account in interpreting the soil inventories because the observed SOC differences through time are generally small.

Markövervakningsprogram kan ge viktig information om rumsliga mönster samt förändringar över tid i markens kolkoncentrationer, men den bias som kan orsakas av att ändra analysmetoder tas ofta inte med i beräkningen. Att samtidigt om-analysera arkiverade jordprover från olika markinventeringar med den uppdaterade analysmetoden ger möjlighet att kvantifiera biasen relaterad till observerade skillnader i kolkoncentrationer. Syftet med detta utvecklingsprojekt var att undersöka om det finns ett bias i kolkoncentrationer beroende på användandet av olika analysmetoder inom den svenska Mark- och grödoinventeringen. För det ändamålet valde vi ut arkiverade jordprover med hjälp av en Conditioned Latin Hypercube Sampling Method från de tre första inventeringarna och om-analyserade kolkoncentrationer. De om-analyserade kolkoncentrationerna var något lägre än de ursprungliga värdena i databasen, med en medelskillnad på -0,04 % och 95 % konfidensintervall på -0,07 % ~ -0,01 %. En parvis jämförelse visade en signifikant skillnad mellan om-analyserade kolkoncentrationer och de som finns i databasen. Analysmetoden hade en signifikant effekt enligt den linjära regressionen av om-analyserade kolkoncentrationer med befintliga kolkoncentrationer och grupperade analysmetoder, i synnerhet visade prover som innehöll karbonater att ha stora skillnader i om-analysen, vilket tyder på att biasen var åtminstone i viss utsträckning beroende på analytiska metoder.
